Lot Description
Very Rare 1840 Half Cent
Second Restrike
1840 Braided Hair Half Cent. Second Restrike. B-3. Rarity-6. Small Berries. Proof-62 BN (PCGS).
Striking eye appeal for the grade as the fields are deeply reflective and contrast nicely with the sharp frosty devices. Both sides are toned a distinctive light rose with accents of soft violet, blue-green and gold. Scattered light hairlines in the obverse field account for the grade. The reverse fields exhibit bold die finishing lines throughout. Beyond the patina, concrete identifiers are very few. One tiny anomaly on the obverse rim below and to the right of the date catches the light and an extremely faint long, curling lint mark may be seen from the browlock through Star 5, nearly to the rim. A fine example to represent the type in Proof.
Provenance: From the Collection of Henry Mitchell. Earlier from Scotsman's sale of October 2010, lot 205; Doug Bird.
PCGS# 1251. NGC ID: 26Z5.
